6 Tips on how to avoid making unnecessary touch ups

Traditionally we guarantee our work and offer a touch up 4-6 weeks after the permanent makeup procedure. It’s fine if we need to do a small touch up here and there, but when we have to do more, it’s not beneficial to the client, because it involves their time and yours.

You could save time and money from first interaction with your clients taking into consideration the following 6 tips:

  1. Have a good communication with your client
  2. Don’t get influenced by your client
  3. Implant the color/pigment properly
  4. Do the touch up during the same session
  5. Make sure your client follows the instructions
  6.  Set an appointment for follow-up, not for a touch up

The softap technique has the advantage that it does not generate much trauma and therefore the inflammation is much smaller, which allows a better implantation of the pigment, however there are times when we need to make unnecessary touch ups.

Here are 6 tips in detail on how to avoid them:

1.  Have a good communication with your client
On one occasion I attended a person who wanted a Soft Eyeliner with a brown color and looked as natural as possible. For this, I made an eyelash enhancement and applied the color Cafe Olé. A month later she returned for the touchup saying that she wanted the eyeliner thicker and darker. I made a thicker eyeliner and applied the color Earth. A month later, I received a call from her saying that she wanted a new touch-up because she wanted the eyeliner even thicker and darker. At that moment I used Mahogany and made a really thick eyeliner.
I was not happy and talked to her explaining that what she had asked me initially was something very soft and natural and what I had done that day was something that I did not consider soft and natural, and she answered: This is what I wanted. If you don't want to go through situations like this, it’s important that you understand what your customer wants and what is the best effect for her.

On the other hand, you need to properly explain the difference between the effects that you offer: Individual hair strokes vs. Eyebrow Shading vs. Solid Eyebrows, and
Eyelash Enhancement vs. Thin-Eyeliner vs. Thick-Eyeliner.
2.  Don’t get influenced by your client
You should always be in control of your patient and the situation, you are the professional and you must do what you have to do. Our clients want to see their eyebrows before finishing the procedure and when they see them, their comment is: Leave my eyebrows as is, I love them, do not do anything else.

But if you haven't finished, it is possible that the color wasn't properly implanted and that you will need to apply it again a month later. If you want to show your client the final result, you can give her the mirror after the first pass. That will be the color and effect closer to what it will be in a month.

You need to explain her that at the end of the procedure the color will be 30% darker and that it is possible that the effect is more compact than it will be in a month. Thus, your client will be calm and you will be able to do your work as it should be.
3.  Implant the color properly
Do not be afraid to implant the color well, be confident and gentle at the same time. The color must be implanted in the dermis to be on the skin for at least 2 years. If the color gets more superficial (in the epidermis), the color will be easily lost during the cellular desquamation.
To achieve a good implantation of the color performing the softap technique, you must stretch the skin very well and make sure that every touch is effective. For this the velcro sound is a key, as well as to perform the procedure with a suitable rhythm, and make the number of taps and passes according to the effect that you want to get.
For shaded or solid eyebrows I recommend making 3-4 passes of 10 taps in each spot and moving slowly creating a good coverage. For individual hair strokes the implementation of color is defined by the application of the technique that you use either microblading or Softap.
4.  Do the touch up during the same session
I recommend that once you think you're finished, apply a little more anesthetic and do one more pass.
Take this as if it were the touch up.

5.  Make sure your client follows the instructions
Not only give your client post instructions in paper, but take your time to read it and explain them to her. Your client must maintain a good hydration of her makeup, without over applying ointment.
When the client gets over the ointment, the crust softens and falls much faster, losing much more color than desired and requiring touching up a month later.
Your client should not have contact with chlorinated water or seawater during the first month, because the color will not set well and clear before time.
6.  Set an appointment for follow-up, not for a touch up

  • Follow up 4-6 weeks after the procedure.
  • At this point you can establish whether or not it is necessary to perform a touch up.
  • When you make a touch up appointment for your client, she hopes that you will do it on that date. If you decide not to, she will not be satisfied becasue she hopes that you will keep your word.
